Joe Hsieh is an award-winning animator whose works often explore the dark side of human nature and are filled with horror and suspense. His _Meat Days(2006)_ and _The Present(2012)_ won Best Animation at the 2008 and 2013 San Diego Asian Film Festival. _Night Bus(2020)_ was awarded Best Animated Short Film in the 2020 Taipei Golden Horse Award.

恐怖驚悚題材並非動畫主流，謝文明卻情有獨鍾，可能跟從小愛看恐怖片脫不了關係。不同於大部分觀眾停留於電影表層的驚嚇、恐懼、血腥、和煎熬，謝文明看的是「人性」，「因為我覺得人性很複雜，而恐怖驚悚類型的電影，可以把人性詮釋地很到位。」另一方面，恐怖片也在青少年時期的謝文明心中，打開了一扇名為「想像力」的窗，所以當鬼娃恰吉掄刀砍人的時候，他心中的OS可能是「哇！這個娃娃竟然會殺人」、「原來這樣也可以！這種設計太可愛了」……… 「我喜歡動物。」謝文明幾乎每部作品都有一種具有象徵意義的動物：《肉蛾天》亂世中的母親，為了餵飽丈夫孩子，賣淫換取死刑犯的人肉，片中有跟人一樣搶奪食物的烏鴉；《夜車》中一隻被公車撞死的母猴，竟牽連出海濱公路的一樁樁命案。而預計2024年底完成的新作《螳螂》則是發生在花街的故事，描述作為母親的酒家女為了拯救孩子，化身「螳螂」嚙食尋芳客的故事。「人跟動物很像，為了生存會找到一套生存模式，有些會不擇手段。」謝文明平緩的語氣中帶著通透人性的體悟。 謝文明創作的過程很像修行，大約每隔幾年才推出一部動畫短片，大銀幕上的每幀畫面就是他的道場。不急不躁、重質不重量，這樣的堅持保證了每次出擊都會獲得豐碩成果，包括2008年聖地牙哥亞洲影展最佳動畫片《肉蛾天》、2012台北電影節最佳動畫片《禮物》、到連續在日舞影展、薩格勒布國際動畫影展、渥太華國際動畫影展、東京國際短片影展、棕櫚泉國際短片影展、克萊蒙費宏短片影展、金馬獎及台北電影節等20多個獎項的重磅作品《夜車》。謝文明用盡全力搏來的獎項，是走過全心全意投入創作的艱辛之後的豁然開朗。謝文明坦言，「被看到」是一件很重要的事，「我相信只要...
